After years of rumors, Apple has finally made a foldable. The iPhone Duo, unveiled at Wednesday's "Surprise and Shine" event, opens from a passport-sized phone into a 7.6-inch screen. It starts at $1,999 and goes on sale October 23.
It was the centerpiece of John Ternus's first keynote as Apple CEO. "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original," Ternus said in Apple's press release.
Apple is arriving late to a category Samsung has shaped for seven years and Google has been refining since 2023. So the real question is not whether Apple can build a foldable. It is whether the Duo does enough differently to justify costing more than its main rivals.
iPhone Duo: the key specs
The Duo uses a short, wide book-style design. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says offers 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's, according to Apple.
Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so apps scale up proportionally when you unfold the phone instead of reflowing into a new shape. Both displays support ProMotion, Always On and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Inside is the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro, paired with a custom vapor chamber. Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

Durability: IP68 and a 100-part hinge
Apple is leaning hard on durability, which has long been the weak spot for foldables. The Duo carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, the same as regular iPhones.
That matters more than it sounds. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 is rated IP48, which only guards against particles 1mm or larger. MacRumors pointed to iFixit's dust test on the Fold8 last month, in which grit in the hinge produced grinding noises and the phone stopped opening normally. Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, like the Duo, is rated IP68.
Apple says the hinge uses more than 100 components, with carbon fiber support plates holding the center of the display flat when the phone is open. A magnet array helps it close firmly. Ceramic Shield 2 protects the outer display, which Apple says has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
The inner display has a stack of layers. Apple describes a scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer cover layer it says is up to 40 percent stiffer than other materials used in the industry. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding panel, and a titanium plate sits underneath.
What about the crease?
This is the question every foldable buyer asks, and Apple's answer is careful. On its product page, Apple says the inner display is "wonderfully flat and smooth." It also says special adhesives let the display layers "glide as the screen folds, minimizing stress and crease."
Notice the word "minimizing." Apple does not claim the crease is gone. Its press release says the matte nano-texture finish "minimizes crease visibility," which is not the same as removing it.
Journalists who saw the Duo briefly at Apple Park after the keynote reported that a crease is still visible in certain lighting. MacRumors said Apple did a better job than Samsung at hiding it. How well it holds up after months of folding is something only long-term testing will show.
Apple also has not published a fold-cycle rating. Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Fold8 for 500,000 folds, as MacRumors noted.
Touch ID, cameras and the trade-offs
The Duo does not use Face ID. Instead, Touch ID is built into the side button, so the same unlock method works whether the phone is open or closed. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch. Camera Control is included, but MacRumors reports there is no Action button.
The camera system is where Apple made the clearest compromise. There are two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, the same Ultra Wide used in the iPhone 18 Pro. There is no dedicated telephoto lens. Instead, Apple offers an "optical-quality" 2x crop from the main sensor.
The Duo also skips the variable aperture from the 18 Pro. The folding design does add some new tricks. You can take selfies with the rear cameras and preview them on the outer screen. A mode called Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to catch a child's attention.
A hidden FaceTime camera sits under the inner display and stays out of sight when not in use. Video recording tops out at 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision on the main camera.
iOS 27.1 and Apple Pencil support
The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not the iOS 27.0 release arriving on Monday. That suggests iOS 27.1 will be ready by late October.
Apple has reworked iOS for the new shape. The Dock, Lock Screen controls and app navigation move to the side of the screen. The Dynamic Island turns vertical, and the open display shows two Home Screen pages with a column of widgets on the left.
Split View lets you run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, or open two windows of the same app, such as Safari. Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack have already adapted their apps. StandBy now works on either screen even when the phone is not charging, so a half-open Duo can act as a desk clock or photo frame.
Apple Pencil support is coming, with limits. The Duo works only with the $79 Apple Pencil with USB-C, not the Apple Pencil Pro. That model lacks pressure sensitivity, according to MacRumors. Pencil support also will not be there at launch. Apple says it arrives "later this year" in a software update.
Battery and charging
Apple split the battery into two cells, one on each side of the fold. It has not disclosed the capacity. Instead, battery life depends on which screen you use:
- Up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display.
- Up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display.
- Up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally.

A few things stand out.
Price. Reuters reported that the Duo costs about $100 more than both rivals at comparable base storage. Samsung's larger Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the exception at $2,100.
Weight and thickness. The Duo is the heaviest and thickest of the three. The Fold8 is 53 grams lighter and 1.6mm thinner when closed. That is a noticeable difference in a pocket.
